About The Upper Potomac Music Weekends

Located at the Shepherd Springs Retreat Center in 2023, this new site offers us a great place to be together for the entire weekend, with comfortable lodging, healthy meals and several large classrooms for our workshops and jams.

Each program offers a slightly different flavor or theme to appeal to a wide range of students.

Our full weekend programs for the 2023 season will be:

Pipers Weekend - January 6-8, 2023

Weekend retreat featuring classes, concerts, sessions and private tutorials for a variety of bellows-blown bagpipes, flute, fiddle, and mixed instruments. Staff include: Jerry O'Sullivan (uilleann pipes), Dick Hensold (Northumbrian smallpipes), Rosalind Buda, and Iain MacHarg on Scottish smallpipes and borderpipes, and special guests TBA. Classes for a range of levels of ability.

Fiddle Retreat - January 20-22, 2023

Workshops, Concert, Jam Sessions and a Contra Dance for fiddlers and those who play with them. A variety of styles are presented by some of the region's finest fiddle teachers with an emphasis on dance fiddle styles including Cape Breton, Scottish, Irish, Appalachian, and Quebecois. 2023 teachers are Sean Heely (Cape Breton, Scottish), Brian Conway(Irish), Audrey Knuth (Contra, English, and more), Rachel Eddy (Old Time ), and more (tbc).

Fall Dulcimer Retreat - September 8-10, 2023

Workshops, classes, concerts and jam sessions for hammered dulcimer, fiddle, and mixed instruments with special guest instructors including hammered dulcimer players. Staff includes, Tina Bergmann, Jody Marshall, Mark Alan Wade, Paul Oorts on mixed-instrument classes and special guest, Pieter Blondelle.
